Artist Statement
My work deals with society's ills on a local, national and sometimes personal level. The narratives that I create are drawn from popular culture, my rural Missouri heritage and upbringing and American and world politics. The often strange and humorous occurrences, places and people in our world offer a never-ending source of inspiration for my prints. I call this work rural satire. My chosen medium is printmaking, specifically the woodcut. The combination of dark humor with the inherently expressive medium of the woodcut heightens the complexity of my images. Through the democratic medium of printmaking, I am able to engage in a broad-based social commentary that touches all levels of society in some way, inspired by my heroes, Durer, Hogarth, Goya, Posada and Daumier.
